Why I NEVER count calories & why you don’t need too!
Starting to eat a healthy diet is not a diet it is a lifestyle and can you imagine living a life where you count calories all the time…YUKKKKK no thank you!!!
There is huge misconception about calorie counting and its important you know that not all calories are created equal. Eating a meal with less calories but also less nutrition is pointless! Will you loose weight of course you will but your body will be literally starving for nutrition and eventually the weight will come back because you can only last so long in starvation. That is why so many short term diets see the dieter gaining back the weight sometimes they even gain back more.
So this is why I NEVER count calories! But if you are in the habit of calorie counting and you find it helpful to maintain healthy eating I’m going to suggest some easier and more maintainable options:
Food Diary: Some of us function best when counting/recording things and a food diary is so much more helpful than counting calories as you not only record what you eat but you can provide details that will give insight into your relationship with food, your eating habits emotional & physical & reactions to foods, therefore giving you information into what works for you and what doesn’t! PS its important if you keep a food diary that you keep it free of judgment! It is just a tool to help you create a healthier lifestyle 😉
Portion Control: In the beginning looking at calories can help you understand more about food but much more important is portions! This is what makes a difference because it has different guidelines for different foods. For example your portion of meat/protein should be smaller than your portion of vegetables and your portion of decadent cheesecake should be smaller than your whole plate 😉
At the end of the day it is your journey and you have to find the methods that work best for you but my personal experience is that once you let go of strict rules and boring mathematics you will enjoy eating healthy so much more (and enjoy life!)! And eventually you will just be able to eat what you want because your body will truly crave fresh vegetables, delicious super food smoothies, homemade salads and the occasional slice of cake!
So to all you calorie counters life doesn’t have to be about counting & measuring food, try letting go and see what happens 😉
